A major focus for 2010 will also be the development and workshopping of an economic model for Pacific Island countries. This will enable countries to apply their own data and predict the cost-benefit estimates from improving health by adopting food control systems to allow high quality foods to be sold in their markets. This cost-benefit analysis will provide a powerful advocacy tool to promote the implementation of control systems.
Following the successful Rice Flour Fortification Meeting in Sydney in 2009, the project will promote the fortification of salt, flour, oils and rice exported to the Pacific Island countries and will convene issue specific workshops with trading partners to deal with technical issues.
The model is currently under development and is to be presented at the Regional Pacific Food Summit in April 2010.
