Regional Food and Health Security Actions

Public-Private-Civic Partnership to Improve Food and Boost the National Health and Productivity of nations

Two key activities of the Project for 2010 will be supporting Pacific Island countries to develop and implement regional food control systems and the development and workshopping of an economic model for Pacific Island countries.

Following the Regional Pacific Food Summit in April, the project will organise and conduct a Regional Pacific Food Control Workshop with key sectors to action the development of food control systems for processed food that includes regional standards, legislation, regulation, labelling, inspection and monitoring, education and enforcement. We will continue to liaise with the PIF Secretariat, key government ministries including Trade and Customs, international and regional agencies, as well as with the food industry to gain overall support for the regional implementation of these systems.

The development of an economic moel for Pacific Island countries will enable countries to apply their own data and predict the cost-benefit estimates from improving health by adopting food control systems to allow higher quality foods to be sold in their markets. This cost-benefit analysis will provide a powerful adovcacy tool to promote the implementation of control systems.
