Rice Fortification

A chronic lack of essential vitamins and minerals in the diet of people in the Pacific contributes substantially to poor health in the region. Milled rice is a significant element in the diet of many Pacific Nations. High rice intakes are reported in these nations with > 98% of the population consuming rice. As with other cereal grains, about 40-90% of key vitamins and minerals are lost during the milling of rice.

In December 2009, key industry, trade, agency and government partners met to exhange technology information and to discuss the feasibility and scope to develop a collaborative action on rice fortification,  in order to improve health and food security in Pacific Island countries.
